In the first major 2016 GOP primary poll to be released since Donald Trump made his official presidential announcement last week, the billionaire mogul has come in second place, behind Jeb Bush but solidly ahead of the entire rest of the Republican field.
Conducted by Suffolk University from June 18-22, the survey asked New Hampshire GOP primary voters who they would vote for if the election were being held today. Bush led the field with 14%, but Trump was not far behind with 11%. Also in the top five were Gov. Scott Walker with 8%, Sen. Marco Rubio with 7% and Ben Carson with 6%. Rounding out the top 10 were Gov. Chris Christie with 5%, Sen. Rand Paul with 4%, Sen. Ted Cruz with 4%, Carly Fiorina with 4% and Mike Huckabee with 2%. John Kasich, George Pataki, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Lindsey Graham and Bobby Jindal all fell below the threshold that Fox News will ultimate use — looking at the five most recent national polls — to determine who gets to participate in the first GOP debate this August. However, when respondents to the Suffolk poll were asked who they thought should participate in the August debate, they placed Trump 11th, behind Santorum and Perry. Carson came in 12th on that list, behind Trump. | |
